STATEN ISLAND, NY. — While the deadline for receiving the first two Economic Impact Payments have expired, the third stimulus check of up to $1,400 per person is still available if you haven’t received it yet.
Most eligible recipients of the payments authorized by the American Rescue Plan in March 2021 have already benefited from stimulus payments delivered by direct deposit or mailed checks, as of January 2022, according to CNBC.com.
But if you haven’t received a payment, your last chance to get these funds is through a 2021 tax return, due on April 18.
The third stimulus check, the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit credit, was issued based on income and number of dependents listed on your 2020 or 2019 tax return. So if you gained eligible dependents during 2021, you could be owed money. And if you never filed a return in 2019 or 2020, you may be eligible for a stimulus credit.
HOW TO CLAIM STIMULUS FUNDS
If you didn’t receive a third government payment but think it’s owed to you, you’ll need to complete the Recovery Rebate Tax Credit worksheet and submit it as part of your 2021 tax return. The worksheet provides instructions about how calculate the amount of money you can claim.
From the third stimulus check most families received $1,400 per person, including all dependents claimed on their tax return. Typically, this means a single person with no dependents received $1,400, while a family of four (married couple with two dependents) got payments of $5,600.
If you never received the third stimulus check, you can also use the Internal Service Revenue’s (IRS) “Get My Payment” tool, available in English and Spanish, only on IRS.gov. It updates once per day, usually overnight.
In addition, if you’re unsure of the status of your third stimulus payment, you can use “trace your payment” and receive the amount owed to you as a tax refund.
CHILD TAX CREDIT
The Child Tax Credit was signed into law by President Joe Biden as part of the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan, designed to help the United States rebound from the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
Around 36 million eligible American families received financial relief as part of the Child Tax Credit, which issued monthly payments between July 2021 and December 2021. Families received up to $300 per child under 6 years of age and up to $250 per child between the ages of 6 and 17.
There have been several petitions for more stimulus checks like those issued in 2020, but Congress has said they have no intention of issuing another round of checks and President Joe Biden’s attempt to further extend the Child Tax Credit through 2022 never made it through the Senate.
