Google Chrome for Android is getting a new toolbar shortcut. Chrome’s toolbar now includes a home button, a new tab button, an address bar, a tab switcher, and an overflow menu (three dots) that contains a long list of other options. The toolbar will now include either a new tab, an option to share, or a voice search option (microphone). What you’ll see is all “based on your usage,” with Google offering a “Current recommendations” option. The new tab and share are frequently used features, and thus, it’s a little easier if they are moved to the toolbar based on usage. This was first spotted by 9To5Google.

Google also allows users to choose the shortcut they need manually, as well as remove the toolbar completely. To access this feature, users can go to Settings and then scroll down to discover the “Toolbar shortcut.” Users can also manually get it with this flag: chrome://flags/#adaptive-button-in-top-toolbar-customization
Toolbar shortcuts were first introduced in Chrome 92 for Android in July 2021. It was made available to some users as part of a standard A/B test. Even after version 101 became stable, its availability has increased significantly in recent weeks, but Google has yet to officially announce the new features.

Because of Chrome’s massive user base, Google is not known for making major UI changes. This is a little tweak in a larger scheme, but it offers a significant UI improvement to the Chrome layout for Android.
