The largest quake detected by humans in our solar system that didn’t happen on Earth was recently recorded on the surface of Mars, according to new information released by NASA.
The InSight Mars lander, which has been sitting on the Martian surface since 2018, includes a seismometer unit that’s detected more than 1,300 quakes since becoming operational.
The largest quake its felt is the May 4th one NASA has recently announced, which is believed to have been a magnitude 5 tremor.
The seismometer unit (seen circled in the image below from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and the California Institute of Technology) looks somewhat similar to the top part of a grill resembling a dome shape.
You can see actual images of the unit sent back from the surface of Mars by clicking here.
Though the InSight Mars lander’s initial mission ended in 2020, NASA will keep the lander operational as long as possible. You can read more about what it’s looking for here.
