Meta Expands Access to Horizons Worlds: What to Know About the VR Social Platform

Meta’s Horizon Worlds VR platform has opened the door to more users in the US and Canada. After first announcing the platform during its Oculus Connect 6 VR developer’s conference in October 2019, the company started onboarding a few users through an invite-only beta in the second half of 2020.

But now, Horizon Worlds is officially expanding its access to the public. Here’s what you need to know about Horizon Worlds and who can now join.

Horizon Worlds Goes Public

If you’ve been eagerly waiting for ages to experience Meta’s Horizon Worlds VR platform, you can if you’re over the age of 18 years in the US or Canada. From December 9, 2021, you no longer need an invite to join Horizon Worlds.

And in case you aren’t familiar with Horizon Worlds, Meta describes it as “a social experience where you can explore, play, and create with others in VR”.

It’s one of Facebook’s efforts to cement its presence in the so-called metaverse.

Alongside Horizon Worlds’ expanded rollout, Meta announced a new team-based game called Arena Clash that you can start playing in the virtual world. Besides, Arena Clash there are other games already available on the platform.

Creators can also create games on the platform with the tools provided by the company for the community to play.


If you’re interested in giving Meta’s Horizon Worlds VR space a try, you should beware of its requirements and limitations.

While Horizon Worlds is free, it has several limitations that mean that you can’t just jump right in like with other Meta apps and products. Straight off the bat, you should be at least 18 years old.

Secondly, you’ll need a Facebook account which is a requirement to use Oculus devices.

Another requirement is Meta’s Oculus Quest 2 VR headset. Once you meet these requirements, you can download Horizon Worlds’ free app on Quest 2 and experience the virtual world.

If you have Quest 1, you should upgrade to Quest 2 since Horizon Worlds will drop support from January 13, 2022.

However, the discontinued Rift S will continue to be supported for a while.

Experience Horizon Worlds VR Platform

Horizon Worlds has come a long way since its first announcement in 2019. But now that it’s publicly available, you can now, finally, give it a try.

In Horizon Worlds, you can play various games, attend different virtual events, and hang out with users from different places in a virtual setting.
