How to Turn Off Microsoft Defender in Windows 11
You might be aware that Microsoft Defender is the antivirus that comes pre-installed with Windows 11. And it’s good to have as it forms a solid line of defense to protect you from malicious malware.
But there are times when you would rather keep Microsoft Defender disabled. Like when you want to download software, which you know is safe, but Microsoft Defender won’t allow it. So let’s see how to turn off Microsoft Defender in Windows 11.
How to Turn Off Microsoft Defender Temporarily with Windows Security
You may like the protection that Microsoft Defender provides, but want to disable it for some time to test an app. You can do that through the Windows Security app in Windows 11:
- Click the Search icon on the taskbar and search for Windows Security.
- Click on Windows Security under Best match or click Open on the right pane under Windows Security App.
- On the page that opens click on Virus & threat protection.
- Click on Manage settings under Virus & threat protection settings.
- Turn the blue toggle off under Real time protection.
- Click Yes on the UAC prompt (to do so you must be an admin on your PC)
Once done, Microsoft Defender will now be turned off.
Once you’re done testing an app, be sure to re-enable Microsoft Defender again to keep your PC safe. Fortunately, if you forget to turn it back on, Windows will automatically do so after a set period of time.
Turn Off Microsoft Defender Only If Needed
Now you know the way to turn off Microsoft Defender in Windows 11. But it’s best if you don’t disable it too often, as it does a good job of safeguarding your PC, and comes free with Windows 11. If you do want to get rid of Microsoft Defender, you can install a third-party antivirus instead and Windows will automatically disable its own security.
Should you settle for the firewall already installed in Windows? Or should you try substituting it for pfSense?
