LOKI Director Believes Kang Scripted The Entire Infinity Saga And Shares Her Thoughts On What Comes Next
The season finale of Loki changed everything we thought we knew about the Marvel Cinematic Universe with the death of He Who Remains and the birth of the Multiverse. This powerful Kang the Conqueror Variant revealed that while he’d been responsible for, well, everything up until his meeting with Loki and Sylvie, he has no idea what comes next… aside from countless conquerors, that is!
Talking to The Direct, Loki director Kate Herron elaborated on Kang’s control of the MCU, and confirmed that, as far as she’s concerned, the villain basically scripted the entire Infinity Saga.
“He says, ‘I paved the road, you just walked down it.’ I guess in theory, yeah, he would’ve scripted [the Infinity Saga] because by our show that’s what we’re saying,” the filmmaker explained. “Everything has been predetermined by this one character, even if up to this point we’ve believed the characters have had free will. Which I think is kind of the fun rug-pull of our show, right?”
“I do believe that moment [when they pass the threshold], he is telling the truth where he’s like, ‘We’re in completely unforeseen time now. I don’t know what’s going to happen,'” Herron said of the Multiverse’s creation. “Because there’s an interesting discussion at hand.”
In the same interview, the director confirmed that the decapitated Time-Keeper did indeed whisper “See you soon” to the God of Mischief and his Variant, and Herron believes Kang has at least an inkling of what comes next (remember, he believes he’ll end up right back in that Citadel).
“My theory, how I interpret it anyway, is that he says he’s gone through every possible scenario. So he probably has an idea of what would happen if Sylvie won the fight, or if Loki won the fight, but he can’t quite predict it. He can’t write that, because obviously they’re their own people. In my head like, I’m like, ‘Oh, I think he planned to say [‘See you soon’] to her, if that happened.’”
We don’t know what will happen when Kang the Conqueror starts to make his presence felt in the MCU, but it’s not going to be good for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. Kang is, without a doubt, a villain with the potential to be the next Thanos and the architect of, oh, how about Secret Wars?
