Like the internet, music unites people. Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion’s “WAP” is the current musical phenomenon enchanting, catalyzing, and entertaining people across the world. That’s some power right there.
Say what you will about 2020’s summer anthem, but you can’t deny the song’s influence online and in people’s homes. Renowned composer Andrew Lloyd Webber certainly doesn’t have a problem with “WAP” and the evidence is on TikTok.
Andrew Lloyd Webber has a TikTok?
Apparently, the 72-year-old king of musicals isn’t immune to the app’s charms and signed up for TikTok back in June. Since then, he’s shared videos of himself playing some of his famous tunes including “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina” from Evita and “Memory” from Cats.
Lloyd Webber also has active Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram accounts where he engages with fans and often answers questions or plays requests. TikTok is a new avenue for him and in one of his first videos, he expressed his excitement about joining the platform.
He is definitely having fun dropping behind the scenes footage and making music — hip-hop remixes included.
Andrew Lloyd Webber remixed ‘WAP’ into ‘Phantom of the WAPera’
For context, Lloyd Webber adapted the 1909 novel Phantom of the Opera into a musical. His stage production first debuted in 1986, landed on Broadway in 1988, and has been viewed by audiences worldwide for decades.
Phantom (along with Cats) stands as one of Lloyd Webber’s most famous creations and has grossed over $1 billion.
We don’t know if Cardi B or Megan Thee Stallion has seen this yet, but Webber put his own stamp on “WAP” and uploaded the video to TikTok. Everyone, take your seats and give a warm welcome to “Phantom of the WAPera.” It is the remix you didn’t ask for and opens with Lloyd Webber dancing to Cardi B’s lyrics. Get into it.
The live instrumentation, the Lloyd Webber groove, and meshing of genres is probably unlike anything you’ve ever seen. To top it off, the accompanying hashtags are on point too: #cardib, #remix, #mashup.
After watching this, there are so many questions. Does Lloyd Webber know the true meaning of “WAP?” Whose idea was it to create and share this on TikTok? Would he consider recording an actual remix with Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion?
So far, the video has over 1 million views and is still picking up steam. It should be noted “Phantom of the WAPera” is Lloyd Webber’s first remix. Some fans like it and some don’t, but such is life on TikTok.
Other famous folks love “WAP” too
Not only did “WAP” take over the charts, but it’s also taken over celebrity playlists. While some want to debate the lyrics, others are digging it. Halle Berry, Christina Aguilera, Hozier, Viola Davis, James Corden, The Real Housewives cast members, and plenty more are fans of the song.
Love & Hip Hop’s Safaree Samuels also made a “WAP” remix as a response to the women’s hit, but social media eviscerated him and it hasn’t blown up. Should Lloyd Webber’s “Phantom of the WAPera” gain traction, perhaps Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion will want to do hilarious collaboration in the name of art.
